The hand is a complex part of the human anatomy. Millions of people experience broken bones within the hands. Due to the fact that we are so dependent on our hands, with just a small loss of function, it can result in lifelong suffering. The hand is composed of 27 bones, including the bones in the wrist. A blow to the hand or a fall onto the hands can cause broken bones. Injuries in the hand can also cause fractures of the fingertips.

Bones of the hand

It is important that you are familiar with the bones in the hands.

Carpals – they are the 8 bones of the wrist. They are not part of the hand, but have vital functions for the functionality of the hand.

Metacarpals – they are the 5 bones that form the palm of the hand

Phalanges – are 14 small bones that form the fingers and thumb. The thumb has 2 phalanges and the other four fingers has 3 phalanges

The knuckles of the hand are called MCP joint (metacarpal-phalangeal joint). Take note that the joints of the fingers are called the proximal interphalangeal joint which are closest to the palm and the distal interphalangeal joint which are closest to the fingertip.

Crush injuries, falls, improper use of tools in the kitchen, tools for gardening and also from sport injuries can cause injuries to the hand. Take note that some of these injuries can be prevented.

Symptoms of a broken hand

  • Swelling of the affected areas of the hand
  • Presence of bruises and pain
  • The fingernails are not properly aligned
  • Weakness of the body
  • Difficulty in holding objects
  • There is a reduced range of motion in the fingers.

Simple first aid treatment can help in preventing further injury

  • Place a clean cloth or gauze over the wound to control any bleeding.
  • Apply ice packs in the injured area to minimize swelling and pain.
  • Remove all jewelries around the hands like rings and bracelets since they would be difficult to remove them when the wound starts to swell.
  • If there is deformity in the hand, support the injured hand by placing it on a pillow and it is the time that there is a need for emergency care.
  • Provide the individual with Tylenol or Advil for relieving the pain.

There are ways of preventing broken hands or injuries

  • Do not use the hands in wiping out debris in a machine. The individual must use a brush that is provided for the purpose.
  • Be sure to check the equipment and machineries before and after using them, and if they are in good condition.
  • Before cleaning any equipment, unplug the connection to the electricity and follow instructions.
  • Do not wear jewelries or loose fitting clothing when working near a machine with moving parts.
  • Be sure wear gloves that fits properly and are meant for the kind of work that is being done.
