Fact Checked
Overview Of Cystitis
- Cystitis is swelling of the bladder, generally as a result of a bladder infection.
Bladder infections are usually caused by:
- Not draining your bladder correctly – for instance, during pregnancy or having an inflamed prostate.
- Injury to the urethra (the pipe that transports urine out of the body).
- Virus being transmitted from the anus to the urethra – for instance, while having sex.
Cystitis Symptoms
- A pressing and desperate need to urinate.
- Pain or burning sensation when you urinate.
- Bladder pain.
When Visit Your Doctor
- Cystitis symptoms can also be caused by other disorders, so kids and men should always visit their doctor if they have signs of cystitis.
- Ladies should visit their doctor if they have the symptoms of cystitis for the first time. They should also go back to their doctor if they notice cystitis more than three times over a one-year period.
Cystitis In Women
- Cystitis is more frequent in females because women have a shorter urethra. The opening of the urethra is also positioned near to the anus, which makes it easy for germs from the anus to get to the bladder and cause an infection.
- Nearly all females will experience cystitis at least once over the course of their life.
Cystitis can take place at any age, but it is more frequent in:
- Women who are pregnant.
- Women who are sexually active.
- Women who have experienced menopause.
Cystitis In Men
Cystitis is less frequent in men. With men, it could be caused by:
- A prostate infection, also known as prostatitis.
- A blockage in the urinary tract, such as a growth or an inflamed prostate.
Treatment Of Cystitis
- Minor cystitis generally clears up within a couple of days.
- You can manage it at home by consuming lots of water and using pain relievers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.
- More serious forms cystitis might require treatment with antibiotics.
